A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of training programs, classroom and online events, e-learning programs, and training content. The Learning Management System (LMS) manages the delivery of self-paced, e-learning courses.

In contrast, a Learning Content Management System (LCMS) is software for managing learning content across an organization's various training development areas. A virtual learning environment (VLE) is a software system designed to support teaching and learning in an educational setting, as distinct from a Managed Learning Environment, (MLE) where the focus is on management.

Open Source Learning Management Software

Moodle is the definitive open source learning management system. Moodle is the brainchild of Martin Dougiamas, who designed the program while working on his PhD. Moodle is extremely easy for students and teachers to use, thanks in large part to the excellent documentation provided, which covers all aspects of the software.

ATutor also desires a mention. Its simple to use and ATutor websites look great. This LMS supports common cartridge learning management materials and an iPhone edition is due for release in March 2010.

Emerging Technologies – The Virtual Classroom and ePortfolios

Despite best attempts to make LMS content interesting, for many individuals it lacks an important ingredient – human interaction. Not surprisingly virtual classroom software such as DimDim is gaining popularity as an alternative to LMSs.

ePortfolios such as Mahara and Elgg are also gaining popularity as a method to help students reflect on their learning as well as providing a media rich alternative to the written resume.

Free Content

If your LMS is SCORM compliant then there is a wealth of great free online learning materials, you just need to know where to look.

Recommendation

There is much more to deploying a LMS than the open source software we have just reviewed. Open Source Education provides a course in elearning and we recommend you complete this training before investing time and energy into a LMS.

If you are a bit technologically challenged, then Open Source Education can get you started on a virtual classroom at lightening speed.
